3 Ways to Make Your Wedding Feel Like Home

One of the major points I wanted to drive home when Kathryn of Creme Brands recreated my website last month was that my passion is creating an event that feels like all your guests are gathered around your dinner table at home - whether you have 25 guests or 250 guests! The reason this is so important to me is because it is a fool-proof way to ensure you are staying true to yourself, and ultimately it’s your first dinner party together as husband and wife! This isn’t to say you shouldn’t take it up a notch, because you absolutely should if that’s your jam! After all, it is the most important dinner party you’ll ever host. But even if you want to take it up a notch or two (or three or four…) these three tips can still make all the difference in ensuring you are staying true to your personal style!

So how do you create a beautiful, elegant celebration for all your favorite people in the world and still make it feel like you are gathered around your own table in your own home?

Find inspiration in home decor

No, you don’t need to walk around your own home and take an inventory of your favorite things (although, you absolutely can if that floats your boat!). But instead of looking through Pinterest for other wedding inspiration, try browsing boutiques and websites for home decor items. Look for textures and colors you are drawn to. Keep a folder of these images or create a Pinterest board for them and look for themes in the color palette, textures, and style. Are you drawn to candlelight? How about soft textures? Or maybe you prefer a more industrial look. You’ll quickly find that there are some definite themes in those images, and they actually complement your own personal style well!

Stay true to yourself

It’s easy to get caught up in the beautiful wedding imagery that abounds all over social media, Pinterest and the vast worldwide web. It’s also easy to get completely overwhelmed by all these images, and you can start to second guess yourself. “I hate the color pink, but the pink linens in this photo I found scrolling through Instagram are gorgeous!” Sound familiar? It’s so, so easy to get caught up in #allthethings when planning a wedding. If you stay true to yourself, you’ll find that those images of pink linens and things you wouldn’t normally be drawn to, won’t be as appealing to you. You’ll also be way less overwhelmed because you’ll be creating a very specific, unique style! Do yourself a favor and do NOT save images of decor that you would never normally find appealing if you weren’t planning your wedding.

Think of your wedding as a dinner party in your home

Not only does transitioning your mindset help create a more warm, inviting environment for your guests, it also helps instantly relieve some of the stress from you and your fiance! You no longer feel like there are SO MANY THINGS to coordinate, and can focus on the things that really matter. Imagine if your wedding were being held at your home (and maybe it is!). What are the most important aspects of having those guests in your home? What are the things you would write on a shopping list that you need to make sure you get because they are your favorite items or because you simply want to evoke a specific mood? This really helps you hone in on the really meaningful, important details and you are not so overwhelmed with details you think should matter, but really they don’t.
